I'M PAT SHOPBELL

Welcome to my gallery. I'm glad you're here.

If I were to sum up my artwork in a phrase, "Old School" would suffice.

I paint representational landscapes and seascapes in oil on stretched canvas; traditional materials applied in traditional ways. My work combines classical realism with a touch of impressionistic color. I use a lot of color and tend to paint rather thinly, employing multiple layers with a lot of glazing to add depth and richness. Composition and brushwork add movement and energy.

The world we live in can be a loud confusing, stressful place. It is my singular goal to create art that is an oasis. I hope my paintings will allow the viewer, if only for a moment, to be transported to someplace beautiful.

Pat (PJ) Shopbell has had a unique and varied art career spanning nearly 50 years. As a sculptor, painter, glass artist and custom saddle maker, Pat has spent a lifetime creating beautiful things.

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, her mother was a talented painter and her father a gifted craftsman and furniture maker. Early in her career, Shopbell apprenticed in a famous stained glass studio and went on to own her own company, Pacific Stained Glass.

Her combined love of art and horses led her to start building custom hand-carved western saddles. For over 30 years, Pat built saddles for some of the best riders and trainers in the country. During this time, she and her husband purchased a large farm in Eastern Washington where they raised hay, cattle and horses for 25 years.

Retired now from farming, Pat and her husband make their home on the rural east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. with time to dedicate to her artwork and surrounded by by endless inspiration, Pat enjoys her days creating striking oil paintings infused with light and movement.
